Krakow is situated in the south of the country, in the close vicinity of the mountains. The area is famous for its tourist attractions. Almost all tourists coming to Krakow also visit Wieliczka, Auschwitz, Wadowice. It is worth visiting other places in Małopolska to get acquainted with Polish culture and traditions, see interesting places and admire the beautiful Polish countryside.
Jura Krakowsko - Częstochowska
About 20 km north of Krakow you can visit picturesque Jurassic valleys of Jura Krakowsko - Częstochowska (Krakow's Valleys, the Ojców National Park) - an ideal destination for one-day trips. It is here that you can visit old castles and strongholds located in Ojców, Pieskowa Skała and Ogrodzieniec. Other attractions encouraging active tourism include a great number of bike tracks, caves and rocks.
Beskidy Mountains
The rolling hills of the Beskidy Mountains are situated 35 km from Cracow with their highest mountain Babia Góra (1725 m). The Beskidy Mountains boast well designed tourist routes. In Szczawnica you can take the opportunity to raft down the Dunajec River. The river has made its way through limestone mountains, forming sharp bends with almost vertical mountains reaching the height of 300m above the ground. You can also enjoy hiking and bike routes along the Dunajec River leading to Slovakia, where you can taste the delicacies of the local cuisine.
Tatra Mountains
The lovers of high mountains and winter sports are encouraged to visit the Tatra Mountains (100 km to the south of Cracow). This is a mountain range with the typically alpine lie of land. It is here that Poland's highest mountain is located - Rysy (2499 m). You will find a great number of hiking routes both for beginners and experienced tourists. The city of Zakopane, referred to as Poland's winter capital, is situated at the foot of the mountains.
You can also travel across the region of Małopolska by car, enjoying the routes of The Land of Eagle's Nests and The Wooden Architecture Route.
There are six national parks in Małopolska: Tatra National Park, Babiogórski National Park, Pieniński National Park, Ojcowski National Park, Gorczański National Park and Magurski National Park.
A number of exciting places are located within easy reach of Krakow in the southern and central parts of the country: Kłodzko in the Sudety Mountains (280 km), Wrocław (270 km), Częstochowa (140 km), Myślenice (30 km), Krynica (140 km), Stary Sącz (110 km), Zamość (320 km) and Kazimierz Dolny (270 km).
